FAQ's
Why has financial aid become so complicated and competitive?
This is due to a combination of things. Less aid is available from governmental sources, teachers salaries are always rising, as are the maintenance and upkeep at schools, changes in technology have schools scrambling to stay up-to-date and endowments and state budgets are shrinking.
Who is eligible for financial aid?
Almost every family can qualify for some form of financial aid, regardless of income level.
How is financial aid awarded?
On a first come, first served basis. It’s important to prepare well in advance of your expected need.
Should my child take advantage of a subsidized loan program?
Absolutely. Interest does not accrue while your child is in college and payments are not due until six months after graduation.
Don’t all schools offer the same amount of aid dollars?
No! This actually varies widely and is well worth researching ahead of time. In addition, some schools offer mostly free money while others offer mostly loans.
My child just received a financial aid package but it’s not for as much as we were hoping it would be. Is this negotiable?
Yes, but effective negotiating requires an intricate knowledge of the financial aid system and processes.
Are financial aid forms really that difficult to fill out?
According to the Department of Education, approximately 80% of federal financial aid forms are completed incorrectly. Incorrect forms add another 4-6 weeks to the processing time, risking that financial aid dollars will go to someone ahead of your child in the processing line.
Isn’t a state school less expensive than a private college or university?
The tuition may be lower, but your out-of-pocket costs can be higher with a state school because private schools offer many more financial aid options.
I’m in a higher tax bracket. How can I increase my child’s chances of securing financial aid?
By leveraging the financial aid “legal loopholes,” similarly to the way many smart people secure tax-favored status to reduce their income taxes. We can find these legal avenues for you and guide you through them.
